El Paso is undergoing a technological transformation, with artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative startups playing pivotal roles in reshaping the city’s economic and educational landscape.
Educational Initiatives Paving the Way
The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has been at the forefront of integrating AI into education. In December 2024, UTEP launched a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence, becoming one of only three Texas universities to offer such a program. This initiative aims to equip students with the skills necessary to thrive in an AI-driven world.
Furthering this commitment, UTEP established the AI Institute for Community-Engaged Research (AI-ICER) in April 2025. This interdisciplinary think tank leverages AI technologies to address regional challenges, including water scarcity and health disparities.
Collaborations between educational institutions and the city have also flourished. The El Paso Computes program, a partnership between UTEP, the City of El Paso, and the El Paso Independent School District (EPISD), was introduced to expand computer science and AI education across K–12 schools. Supported by a $3 million investment from the city, the initiative aims to prepare 750 teachers and reach over 20,000 students with foundational and advanced computing skills.
Startups and Workforce Development
El Paso’s startup ecosystem is thriving, with companies like Aziel Technologies LLC offering web design, software development, and 3D printing filament to local businesses. Bright Sol Tech, with over 14 years of experience, continues to provide innovative digital solutions, emphasizing community engagement and technological excellence.
To address the growing demand for AI expertise, SuperCity AI, in collaboration with Workforce Solutions Borderplex, launched SuperForce in October 2025. This AI-powered apprenticeship program offers paid training, technical education, and pathways into high-demand careers, preparing local talent for the future of work.
Major Investments in AI Infrastructure
Meta’s decision to construct a $10 billion AI-optimized data center in El Paso underscores the city’s growing significance in the tech industry. Announced in March 2026, this facility is set to become one of the largest single-site AI data center deployments globally, supporting Meta’s next-generation AI models and contributing significantly to the local economy.
Community Engagement and AI Literacy
Community initiatives are also playing a crucial role in promoting AI literacy. In December 2025, EPISD, La Nube STEAM Discovery Center, and Microsoft TechSpark launched the Hour of AI program. This initiative introduces students, educators, and families to core concepts in AI and coding, ensuring that the broader community is prepared for the technological advancements shaping daily life.
El Paso’s embrace of AI and technology is not just transforming its economy but also enriching the educational experiences of its residents. Through strategic partnerships, innovative startups, and significant investments, the city is positioning itself as a burgeoning tech hub on the border.
